Okay, so pretend that that circle up there is an Eevee - totally normal and basic. The way it works is that the genetic code of the species is really delicate... like, almost any factor can determine how an Eevee evolves. That means that while most Pokémon only have a single, straight evolution line, Eevee's can branch out in a whole bunch of different ways.

[ she points to the fire symbol that she drew. ] Since my Eevee was exposed to a Fire Stone, it evolved into Flareon, a Fire-type. The same goes for most of the other evolutions - elemental conditions play a big role in how an Eevee grows. There are other factors, like whether it's daytime or nighttime when an Eevee is ready to evolve that can affect it, too. It's what makes Eevee one of the most diverse Pokémon out there!
